Pegasus Equine Diagnostics Ltd Wins Industry Award:
PED’s recently launched innovation in the horse feed supplement market, LaminTec 5-HT™, has won a British Equestrian Trade Association (BETA) International 2010 Innovation Award, in the Feeds & Supplements category. The company is the Reference Lab for a new type of test profile , Biogenic Amine Ratio or BAR™ and was set up to further research into the root cause/s of increased susceptibility to laminitis .

Metabolic conditions associated with reoccurring laminitis are life-threatening and commonly seen worldwide. P.E.D®’s aim is to identify ‘biomarkers’ for imbalances in the body which occur over time and provide ways to measure the imbalances and help maintain health in the equine.

In 2008/9 Pegasus Equine Diagnostics Ltd successfully carried out a voluntary feed trial with an equine charity , an equine sanctuary in Bristol, and clients of veterinary practices. This involved a formulation containing feverfew herb , intended to support normal functioning of the horse’s physical and blood.

Feverfew (Tanacetum parthenium) is a natural herb commonly found in temperate climates and an ingredient of LaminTec 5-HT™. It has been traditionally used in the treatment of human migraine and has been used medicinally since the first century A.D. The useful part of this herb is thought to be a substance called Parthenolide, a sesquiterpene lactone. Feverfew has anti-inflammatory properties, due to its inhibitory effects on 5-HT release and platelet aggregation. Additionally, serotonin (found in blood platelets) is an inflammatory mediator and is thought to be a causal factor in inflammatory hoof problems at if freely circulating in the blood at high levels.

When feeding a particular supplement, the formulation is important; the ingredients should be ‘standardised’ so that the same amounts (at the same strengths) are present in each batch.

Chronic laminitis is a complex subject and probably the most feared condition in the equestrian world. Many people associated with ponies in an owning or professional capacity agree on the signs and implications of the condition but few agree on the causes and mechanisms behind it. Laminitis research is an ever growing field with new theories ‘popping up like daisies’ in recent years; in many ways this is positive element, however, things are changing so quickly that theories are often quickly disregarded. Many of us may be familiar with this in family life, e.g. a particular vitamin supplement being ‘all the rage’ only to fall out of favour with warnings about its use later! More funding is needed for research; will there ever be one ‘correct answer’ for an increased susceptibility to laminitis?
