Dog Breed: American Foxhound
The American Foxhound has an appearance very similar to that of a Beagle. The dog generally stands between 21 to 25 inches and weighs from 65 to 75 pounds. This breeds athletic sleek body is covered with a smooth coat of tan and white, red and white or black red and white combination. The admirable speed of this excellent hunter is attributed to the well boned strong legs.
The American Foxhound is a very old breed – older than America, the country it was named after. The breed originated from the English dogs that were brought to the New World in 1650 by Robert Brooke.
In Great Britain, these dogs were highly acclaimed for their excellent hunting abilities. These dogs are favorite hunting companions of the British landed gentry. On a fox hunt, packs of American Foxhounds will chase the prey while hunters follow on horseback. Hunters will know if a prey is found by the change in the melodious barking of the hounds. Settlers of the New World utilize these dogs to hunt foxes as well. However, because of the ferocious tenacious nature, it was rumored that the dogs were utilized by the English military commanders to track and hunt Indians.
The crossing between English Hounds and the dogs of Irish and French settlers resulted to the development of a new breed – the American Foxhound. This has resulted to the development of the American Foxhound.
The American Foxhound was actually developed to be a hunting dog. This dogs would love nothing more than to hunt. An ultra sensitive scenting ability, a remarkable staying power and a passionate desire to overpower a prey make this breed a notable hunter. An American Foxhound is an intense hunter, once a prey is sighted, the dog will not stop until the animal is taken. As the breed name suggests, foxes are the usual prey of these dogs although these hunting dogs will not pass up the chance to run after any animal.It is not surprising if this breed is on the top list most valued hunting dogs.
American Foxhounds are highly valued for their excellent hunting abilities. Although the dogs exhibit a courageous and tenacious temperament when hunting, American Foxhounds have a sweet and gentle personality. Highly energetic while hunting, this dog turns into a calm, gentle and sweet family companion. This breed of dogs, unlike other breeds, does not give its loyalty to just one person. This breed that loves the whole family is particularly affectionate and gentle with children.
