As every dog owner knows, fleas and ticks can be a real pain to get rid of. By their general nature, fleas and ticks burrow themselves into the hair of your pets which makes eradicating them quite a laborious task. If left untreated, ticks and fleas can spread diseases to your pet or pets which can cause some very serious conditions such as anemia, paralysis and anaplasmosis, amongst many others. If you notice your dog suffering from hair loss, skin lesions, fever, fatigue or general lethargy, depression or excessive itching, then it is likely that they have a tick or flea infestation.

The process of getting rid of these parasitic bugs can be difficult if you do not do your homework beforehand. Not only should you treat your pet with the right kinds of medication, but you also need to look at treating your home to prevent these parasites from spreading and returning to feed on your dog’s blood. Even though it can be confusing choosing the right medication, a little research will go a long way and it is imperative that you know that what medication you will be using is best for the desired application.

The first and most obvious step to eradicating this problem is to clean your dog thoroughly to try to remove as many of these pests as possible. Ensure that you use a dog shampoo that is designed to combat flea and tick infestations and make sure that you read through and fully understand the product’s instructions before you apply the treatment. If you know your pet is allergic to certain chemicals then make sure you bear this in mind and if you are in any doubt, contact your veterinarian for advice. Once you have properly cleaned your canine companion, you can them apply flea and tick drops to certain areas of the dog’s skin, as per the medication’s instructions and possibly apply a medication in the form of powder also.

Next you need to treat the environment in which your pet lives for possible flea and tick infestations. This means cleaning your entire house with treatments that are specifically designed to eradicate fleas and ticks. There are also product on the market that you can use to treat outdoor areas such as kennels and gardens. Do not forget to thoroughly clean your pets bedding and rest areas using the correct solutions such as flea and tick powders or sprays.

It is important that you remember to continue to treat your dog for at least 2 weeks at regular intervals. Failure to regularly clean your home and your dog will result in the infestation returning. Even if you see no signs of the tick or flea infestation, it is still advisable to be pro-active in your pet grooming and cleaning as they can very easily return.

Now Try – Frontline For Dogs

Fleas and ticks may be rather tiny, but that does not mean that they do not pose a threat to your cat. Tapeworms can travel in a flea’s bloodstream and their incessant drawing of blood can cause anemia, a condition especially dangerous to kittens. Ticks have become synonymous with Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain spotted fever. If left unchecked, these small insects become problematic, and it is therefore important to keep your cat free from ticks and fleas.

As the old adage goes, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, and it applies to this situation quite nicely. Tall grass and deep brush are breeding grounds for ticks and fleas, so cut down this growth around your property. Cats like to roam, so the less overgrowth they encounter, the better. If you have a larger yard, a fence can be effective at keeping your cat from venturing off of your property and getting into vegetation that is rife with ticks and fleas.

Thanks to medical advancements, there are several spot on treatments that can be applied to your pet that have been shown to kill 98% to even 100% of the ticks and fleas that your cat comes across. These spot on treatments are liquids that are applied between the shoulders of your cat once a month. As long as you remember to apply the medication monthly, you stand a strong chance of stopping an infestation before it starts. Just mark your calendar or set a reminder on your cell phone. Flea collars are also helpful but have limited efficacy when used alone; however, when employed in conjunction with spot on treatments, they add a nice extra layer of protection.

Unfortunately, fleas and ticks sometimes make it past your best defenses and not only infest your cat, but make their way into the home as well. Your cat will not be happy, but a warm bath featuring a good, medicated shampoo scrubbing is one of the best ways to kill fleas and ticks that have taken up residence on him or her. Dips and sprays are also effective, and may be used to kill fleas and ticks that have infested the carpet and bedding too.

As long as you are dedicated and employ preventive measures, you can keep ticks and fleas off of your cat. Try to keep him or her out of dense thickets and apply liquid treatments once a month. Following some easy steps can solve a difficult problem.

They say that dogs are man’s best friend, so if you have a dog you inevitably want the best for them. With busy lives and not much spare tie, a dog walking service can be the perfect way to make sure your canine friend gets all the exercise they need. It can be a really good idea to go for a local dog walking service as this will make things much easier for both you and them, so investigate the phone book and internet for services based near you.

The service on offer is obviously really important, so think about what you need and whether it’s offered by your prospective services. For instance, you need to think about how often you would like your dog to be walked (once or twice a day are common options). You should also consider whether you just need an occasional dog walker or if it will be more of a regular arrangement, as this might affect the service you ultimately decide to use for your dog.

You should also ask the prospective dog walking services for a breakdown of their charges so you can see roughly how much it might cost. This will help you determine whether your budget can cover the cost of it. For example, if you want to have your dog walked separately from other dogs or would like them to be walked at a certain time of day, then you might have to pay extra. Also, if you choose to use the service regularly then you might be offered a small discount.

Another really important thing to ask your potential dog walking service is whether you get a dedicated dog walker. Some services will provide you with someone who will always be in charge of your dog, but others will send you different walkers depending on who is available and when your dog is being walked. It’s a good idea to check this out in case your dog is afraid of certain types of people or is friendlier when they know the person walking them.

One last thing to consider when making your choice is the reputation of the service. Ask them for some recommendations or referrals from the current and previous customers. This will help give you peace of mind while your dog is with them and tell you more about their service. Also ask people you know if they have any recommendations of dog walking services they might have used in the past as this can be a great way of making sure you get the best option for your dog.

Dogs are dubbed as man’s best friends because these animals are generally loyal, affectionate, and friendly and show their gentle nature to the family. However, some breeds are naturally aggressive so that ownership of these dogs is prohibited in some countries. Guard and protection dogs are specifically developed to have an aggressive and ferocious temperament.

Dogs have been domesticated for thousands of years and these animals have become well loved members of the family. However, these animals have retained their predatory instinct and a stimulus can easily stir up the latent ferocious nature of the dog. It is not surprising if more than 4 million Americans get bitten by dogs every year. A lot of dog bite injuries are caused by the family’s own dog. It is therefore necessary to learn how approach a dog.

Dog owners, especially the children must know how to approach a dog. Apart from being highly territorial, dogs are food motivated too. Dogs would instinctively guard its territory, its food and its toys. Even the most gentle dog would react ferociously if a threat to its territory is perceived. People and especially children must not tease the dog by trying to get a toy or take away the food the dog is eating. Not knowing that your purpose in taking away the bowl is to add more food, the action will stir up the dog’s latent aggressive temperament.

Kids are generally fascinated with dogs. The little ones cannot resist touching a sleeping pet. A startled dog would instinctively bite. Children must be made to understand that it is dangerous to startle a sleeping dog. When approaching the dog, make sure that it can see you.

Because of the close bond, a dog will tolerate family members to access its territory but aggression will certainly be shown to unfamiliar people. Dog lovers will always be enticed to touch a handsome dog. A gentle looking dog though may turn aggressive to the touch of an unfamiliar person . Ask the owner if it is alright to touch the dog. Slowly approach the dog but don’t stare directly as it can be misconstrued by the dog as a challenge. Test the temperament of the dog by extending a palm-down hand. A friendly dog will sniff the offered hand.

Bringing a pet home is exciting. But, before you go out and pick up your new family member, make sure you first take the steps necessary to prepare your home. This will help you to have the best possible experience with your new pet from day one. There are several important things to consider before bringing your new dog or new cat home.

A new animal is very hard on your other pets. The simple fact is that they probably won’t be as happy about the new addition to your family as you are. Other cats and dogs often feel jealous of a new animal. This jealousy can lead to bad behavior, anger and even fights. Until you know how your older pets and the new addition will get along, it is important to carefully monitor all interaction. Don’t assume that you won’t have any problems. Even the friendliest animals sometimes have a bad reaction to a new pet. Try introducing them slowly. Give the new cat or dog a little time to get comfortable before letting them meet the other animals. Watch for signs of frustration and anger and be sure them have space if necessary.

New animals, especially puppies, may have a few accidents in your home. Before bringing home any new animal, prepare your home for the possibility of accidents. Buy an enzymatic cleaner so you can quickly clean any carpet spots, and keep it in an accessible location. Also remove any expensive rugs or floor coverings until the new pet is fully potty trained. You will want to make sure that someone can stay home with the new animal for several days to help them get used to going potty in the new location.

Another important consideration is to make the new pet feel at home. Consider purchasing a bed for them so that they will have somewhere of their own to sleep. Toys and treats are another great way to welcome this new pet into your family. As the new animal gets used to its new surroundings, be patient. It may need a little alone time to feel comfortable.

Preparation will help make the arrival of a new pet successful. By taking the time to implement these simple tips, you can make your home a welcome and safe environment for your new cat or dog.

Registering a dog is not obligatory as dog owners have the option to register or not to register the pet. Registering or not registering the dog will not make a difference to the enjoyment, companionship and entertainment you will have for choosing to have a dog for a pet.

A kennel club registration certificate is not an assurance that the dog will not be destructive when bored nor would it mean that the dog will suddenly be affectionate to the people it does not consider as its friends. Taking time to register the pet though is important as you may think of breeding the dog someday. Of course for a purebred dog to be mated with another purebred being registered with a kennel club is necessary. In registering a puppy you need to present the Dog Application Registration that is provided by the breeder when the puppy was purchased.

It is imperative for breeders to register their dogs. People that keep dogs specifically as home companions seldom take the trouble of registering the pet. Registering the pet would give an owner benefits. A dog owner is not unlike a proud parent that would be more than pleased at the success of the pet. A dog that garnered awards in kennel club events would make an owner extremely proud but this will only be possible if the dog is a registration certificate holder.

You can register your dog in the American Kennel Club or in the United Kennel Club. Registering the dog and paying the required registration fee would be easy as long as the requirements specified by the kennel club are met. The American Kennel Club for instance requires three generations of verified parentage. Aside from having a registered sire and dam, the litter must be registered by the breeder as well.

A Dog Registration Application filled up with all the vital registration information must be provided by the breeder when the puppy was purchased. A dog owner can fill up a paper copy of the application or complete an online form. Information such as the name, gender, color and markings of the dog, as well as the name address and signature of the owners must be supplied. Submit the filled up registration form, pay the registration fees and wait a few months for the registration certificate that will be mailed by the kennel club.

Dogs are one of the intelligent animals but owners should never make the mistake of expecting the pet to have right and wrong values. A dog will not understand the reason why it was punished and vanished to a crate by jumping on an all dolled up master when jumping and giving sloppy kisses is its usual way of greeting.

What disciplinary methods can you use to manage a dog’s undesirable destructive chewing and excessive barking behaviors and control its tendency to chase and torment other pets and to eat spoiled food from the trash cans? Dogs are highly attuned to what humans feel thus these animals can easily interpret and understand the facial expression and body movement of human. Dogs are cunning little and not so little rascals that would know how to achieve an imploring look to get away from the wrath of the master. But this does not mean that your designer shoes will be safe from the dog’s sharp teeth. Unless you do something to discipline the dog, the undesirable act will be repeated again. After seeing the destruction or the mess created by the pet, the dog owner may physically punish or scream at the dog however, this will not accomplish anything more so if the destruction was done much earlier. The dog would not learn anything and would never associate the smacking to the bag-chewing incident.

It is necessary to make the dog understand that human are the leaders of the pack. Dogs must be trained to follow the commands of humans. Training would do a lot in preventing development of inappropriate behavior. Training would be more successful if conducted while the dog is still a puppy. In a firm and clear voice, teach the dog to obey commands that will modify a wrong behavior.

To discipline the dog, you can use methods that will discourage the dog from being destructive . A spray bottle filled with cold water and Bitter Apple are effective tools that disciplines the dog not to manifest a destructive behavior.

The pet will never be weaned from its bad behavior if corrective measures are done after the dog has been destructive. As soon as the dog is seen about to do one of its destructive acts give a STOP or NO command. Disciplining the dog cannot be accomplished at once but consistent training that is reinforced with lots of praise and treats will eventually modify the dogs unwanted behavior.

A pet owner would be annoyed by the dog’s habit of digging holes. Digging, barking and chewing are natural behaviors of dogs thus although these behaviors can be modified they cannot be totally eliminated. Whenever given a chance, a dog will dig. Dogs are lovable and at times exasperating pets because unknowing that digging is an unacceptable behavior, the holes it has made on the garden would be presented to the master with a happily wagging tail.

Dogs are affectionate pets that have the desire of pleasing the master and digging holes can be its way of repaying the master for all the love and the care it has received. Dogs are well loved pets but it would certainly be frustrating if the garden that eats a lot of your free time will be destroyed by the dog again and again. Dog owners would always want to be with the pet thus locking the dog in a kennel to prevent it from digging holes will not be a very good idea. What about recognizing the reasons why the dog digs? Dealing with the reasons why the dog digs can be a better solution to modify the destructive behavior.

The dogs’ unwanted digging behavior will always be attributed to boredom. Boredom is always one of the reasons for the dog’s unacceptable behaviors. Dogs, apart from being energetic are social animals as well. Digging holes is only one of the destructive behaviors dogs will develop if not given the opportunity to expend excess energies or the chance to interact with the human family.

Dogs would always want to receive attention from the family but because of tight schedules, pet owners may not have the time to bond with the pet thus the destructive digging behavior will be developed. The irate master would scold the dog but in a dog’s thinking, reprimand would be better than being ignored. Dogs would dig holes to gain freedom. Dogs have the inclination to roam. Dogs are curious animals thus the sounds and scents on the other side of the fence will be very interesting. To get to the other side, the dog will dig tunnels.

Digging is fun. When the weather is hot the dog will be seen frantically digging. Lying on a newly dug hole will cool the dog’s heated body. In the wild, these animals would dig holes to hide the prey. Dogs use holes to store food in the same way that we humans use refrigerators. Dogs will be seen digging holes to bury bones and other “treasures” that can be unearthed when food is scarce.

Dogs have great appetites and these animals have the inclination to eat questionable (at least to us humans) things. The habit of eating non-food items is called pica. Eating non-edible items is a normal behavior of dogs but dog owners would still be puzzled by this behavior more so if the pet is provided with enough food. Rocks are one of the non-food items that are eaten by dogs.

Puppies are more inclined to eat rocks. Puppies are naturally inquisitive and one way of discovering their world is by using their mouth. The hard rock will be chewed by the pup as if it were a fruity bubble gum. This habit of eating rocks though can have dangerous repercussion on the health of the pet. The soft tissues of the mouth can be wounded by the hard rock. Swallowed, the rock can cause diarrhea as it can really affect the delicate digestive tract of the dog. A blockage in the throat or on the intestinal tract that can be created if a large piece of rock is swallowed can be the cause of death of the pet.

We know that dogs are voracious eaters. We also know that man’s best friends can develop hazardous and socially unacceptable behaviors. Nevertheless we would still be puzzled why dogs eat rocks. The habit of eating rocks can signify that the pet has a medical problem such as brain diseases. If an underlying medical concern was ruled out, the rock eating habit of the pet can be attributed to behavioral problems.

Boredom, stress or anxiety can urge a dog to feast on rocks. Dogs would always love to get the attention of the family because these are social animals. Dogs that do not get any attention from the family will be bored. Bored dogs will develop destructive behaviors. Eating rocks is a sign that the dog is bored. The habit of eating rocks can be the dog’s way of attracting the master’s attention.

Humans would need to have various laboratory tests to know what is wrong with their body. The same tests and examinations would not be necessary for dogs as nature has provided these animals with the capability to know what is wrong with their system. Rock eating can be the dog’s way of correcting an undiagnosed nutrient deficiency. The rock eating habit can be a wake up call for the dog owner not only to provide the dog with premium quality dog food but also to make time to bond with the dog.

The world as seen in the eyes of a dog will be in white and in different shades of grey. You see, dogs were once believed to have no ability to distinguish colors. Dogs are acclaimed for their heightened senses. Dogs have protected humans using their excellent scenting and hearing abilities. Sighthounds are highly valued for their keen vision that keeps a prey in sight. Dogs are claimed to have the ability to see better in the dark as well . As long as a dog is on guarding duty, people can sleep soundly at night.

Nature has endowed our furry friends with very sensitive senses but the ability to see colors in the same way humans can was left out. Dogs can actually see colors but in a different way than what we humans can do. A study on canine vision conducted in the University of California has proven the fact that dogs can see colors but their vision as compared to human’s vision is less detailed. Of course due to the less detailed vision, a dog may not be able to appreciate a bright red ball given that in the eyes of the dog the color of the ball would either be black or brownish gray.

Humans and dogs are very similar in genetics. Similar to humans, a dogs eye has special cells called cone photoreceptors that controls color perception by catching the light. However, while humans have three cone photoreceptors, dogs only have two. The three cones in our eyes delivers 100% full range vision while dogs have approximately 20% range of color vision as they lack on cone. This makes a dog’s vision about six times inferior than what we humans have.

In the eyes of Fido the rainbow colors would be blue, light blue, grey, light yellow, brownish yellow and dark grey instead of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. The world, as seen by the dog will be in yellow, grey and blue colors. Surprisingly, dogs have the ability to see the subtle differences in the shades of blues and violets.

Humans cannot see the slight change in the shades of violet and blues because of the yellow pigmentation that obstructs short wavelengths and lessens the eyes’ sensitivity. The absence of the yellow pigmentation in the dogs eyes enables our four legged friend’s eyes to be more sensitive in identifying the different shades of violets and blues.
